Do You Need an Electrical Service Upgrade? Key Signs to Watch For

From dimming lights and tripped breakers to electrical fires, outdated and inadequate electrical panels can be an annoyance and downright dangerous.
A new electrical panel enhances the safety and efficiency of your home. A 200-amp service is now standard in most homes, however; many homes locally are rated lower than 200Amps. For example, older homes may have electrical services of 100 amps or 150 amps, which are insufficient for modern appliances.
For larger homes or homes with very high power demands, upgrading to 400amp service may be a wise investment.
Here are some key signs you may be due for an upgrade:
Your panel is more than 25 years old: Older panels may be faulty, damaged, or not have enough power for your needs.
Your home was built before 1980: The electric systems of older homes may have inadequate power for your needs and its panel may have even been recalled.

Your panel was subject to a recall: Certain electrical panels pose serious safety risks. For example, Schneider Electric recalled 1.4 million panels in 2022. Other dangerous panels include:
- Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels (these are our most frequent ones)
- Zinsco panels (GTE Sylvania-Zinsco)
- Challenger panels (Challenger Electrical Equipment Corp or Eaton/Cutler-Hammer)
- Pushmatic panels
Frequent circuit trips: Frequent circuit trips are a clear indicator that your electric panel is overwhelmed by the power needs of your home.
You have fuses: Fuses are less reliable than circuit breakers. If your electrical panel has fuses instead of circuit breakers, it’s time for an upgrade.
Your panel feels warm: An electrical panel that is warm to the touch is straining too much to keep up with your power needs.
You need more breaker spaces: Older panels don’t have as many breaker spaces. With modern appliances and higher energy demands, you may need more breaker spaces.
Use of Too Many Power Strips or Extension Cords: If you frequently rely on power strips or extension cords due to lack of outlets, your electrical panel is likely insufficient for your power needs.
Flickering or dim lights: Similar to circuit trips, flickering or dim lights is a sign that your electric panel is overwhelmed.
Buzzing or crackling sound when the lights are on: If you hear buzzing or crackling sounds when the lights are on, you likely need an upgrade.
Sparks or burning smells: If you notice sparks or burning smells from your electric panel, call a licensed electrician immediately.
High electric bills: Upgrading your electric panel increases your home’s efficiency. If your electric bills are unusually high, it could be a sign you need an upgrade.
You plan to sell your home: An outdated or recalled electrical panel will get flagged in a home inspection. If you’re preparing to sell your home, it’s a good idea to check to see if you need an upgrade rather than make concessions after the fact.
Upgrading your electrical panel ensures your electrical system can handle modern appliances, HVAC, EV chargers, solar panels and more. Plus, it reduces the risk of overheating, shock and fire.
